Eye Conditions Attributed To The Aging Process
If there is one thing that Lasik specialists in New York City are familiar with, it’s the way the aging process affects our vision. When it comes to growing older, it isn’t so much the number that causes our disdain as it’s the way aging affects us and impacts our bodies. A good example of this is our eyes and how they suffer as we grow older. With lower vision clarity, life gets a little tough. The following is a list of eye conditions that are commonly attributed to the aging process.
Cataracts – cataracts could start developing in your 50’s or as late as when you’re in your 80’s or 90’s. In this case, the aging process affects the lens of the eye and causes it to become cloudy over time. If left untreated, cataracts can cause the lens to harden and become opaque. Although Lasik or PRK surgery in New York City will not correct cataracts, they can treat astigmatism after the person has had cataract surgery.
Dry eye – not only is this a painful and unsightly condition, it can become a chronic problem as well. There are a number of causes of dry eye. So when it comes to the treatment of it, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to the problem. Symptoms of dry eye include clear or white discharge, excessive or “reflex” tearing, feeling like a foreign body is in the eye, irritation, pins and needles or stabbing type of pain, and redness.
Glaucoma – although it’s a painless eye disease, failing to detect and treat Glaucoma will result in blindness. This disease causes a build-up of intraocular pressure which can damage the optic nerve at the back of the eye. Glaucoma can be treated with eye drops, pills, traditional glaucoma procedures, and Lasik surgery in New York City, or a combination of these methods.
Macular degeneration – like glaucoma, ARMD or Age-Related Macular Degeneration is a painless eye disease. It is characterized by the degeneration of a specific part of the retina that is responsible for being able to distinguish fine details and central vision. Common symptoms include blank or missing spots in a person’s central vision, blurry central vision, difficulty reading, and distortion or waviness of straight edges or lines.
Presbyopia – during our mid to late 40’s, the lens of the eye begins to lose its elasticity and will eventually result in needing corrective lenses or visiting a Lasik specialist in New York City to discuss vision corrective surgery. Another alternative to corrective lenses is Monovision laser vision correction. For more information visit here: Mandel Vision
